It took pioneering spirit and daring to forge the Legend of the Bürgenstock – a major technical feat deep in the heart of Central Switzerland.

It all began with two men who, one day, decided they would single-mindedly pursue their dreams. Between 1873 and 1904, Franz Josef Bucher and Josef Durrer erected hotels on the shoulders of the Bürgenberg – halfway between the heavens and the waters of the lake. Well-to-do patrons flocked to the Bürgenstock from all corners of the world to witness the technical wonders of the funicular railway and the Hammetschwand Lift – Europe's highest outdoor lift.
