To escape the constraints of life in Paris, Vincent van Gogh (Willem Dafoe) has retired to the villages of Arles and Auvers-sur-Oise, where he is sometimes treated with love sometimes with brutality. Madame Ginoux (Emmanuelle Seigner), the owner of a local restaurant, takes pity on him because of his poverty and gives him a sketchbook that he fills with drawings. Others, however, fear his gloomy mood swings. His close friend and fellow artist Paul Gauguin can no longer stand him and makes off. But his beloved brother and art dealer Theo (Rupert Friend) relentlessly supports him, but never manages to sell even one painting of Vincent.
